Our Coaches
Coach Abom, High School Team
USA Rugby Level 300 Certification

Coach Abom played baseball and football at Central Bucks West High School in Doylestown and continued his baseball career at Brown University. Upon arriving to central Pennsylvania in 1990, Coach Abom started his rugby career playing with both the Harrisburg and Old Gaelic Rugby Clubs.

Coach Abom began to referee rugby in 1998 and in 2004 was named to USA Rugby Developmental Referee Panel giving him specific training and refereeing opportunities throughout the United States.

Coach Abom was a founding member of the Cumberland Valley High School Rugby Club in 2004 and of the Cumberland Valley Youth Rugby Association in 2005. In 2012 Coach Abom was one of the founding members of Rugby Pennsylvania and served as President and Vice President of that organization.

Coach Abom served for 11 years on the board of directors Cumberland Valley’s Eagle Foundation and works as an attorney in Carlisle PA.
Coach Arnell, Lifting Coach

Brendan began playing touch rugby in the 2004 inaugural season at age 7. He began playing CV rugby at the high school from 7th through 12th grade. Went on to study athletic training and play rugby for 2 years at Wheeling Jesuit University and later transferred to Penn State Harrisburg to study exercise science. In his last semester at Penn State, he looks to use his experience and education to begin coaching and physically conditioning high school and college rugby players.
Coach Beard, High School Team
Wes began playing rugby in the Spring of 1995 at Shippensburg University and played there for all four years of college. He then moved on to playing for Old Gaelic RFC in the Spring of 1999. He has been playing there ever since. He has been a member of the coaching staff and a co-founder of CV Rugby from 2004-present. We is currently a teacher at Eagle View Middle School.
Coach Cooley, Junior Team
USA Rugby Level 300 Certification

Mark started playing rugby at Harvard in 1980 and played elite level rugby with Chicago Lions & several other territorial sides for approximately fifteen years. He started at #13, 11 or 14 in 7 national championships and played against many top level international teams including Oxford, Cambridge, Bath, Wasps, Saracens & French Racing Club. He later coached Old Gaelic Men's Club for 10 years prior to coaching at CVHS in 2017.
Coach Mooney, Youth Team
USA Rugby Level 300 Certification

Jim played second row and flanker for Lafayette College then took a 23 year sabbatical during which time he started two local companies, Enginuity LLC and Enginuity Energy. In 2005, his son started playing touch rugby in the youth program which spurred his interest in the sport again. In 2007 he was an assistant coach in the youth program and in 2008 coached the inaugural season of U-15 rugby which went 7 and 2.
Jim coached HMMS soccer for 6 years and serves on numerous local boards including the YMCA and the Eagle Foundation.

Dan played rugby most of his adult life and then turned to coaching and refereeing the sport. His coaching experience includes:

  • Coaching staff (co-founder) of CV Rugby 2004-current

Coach Wilsbach began playing rugby in 2006 at Temple University while studying Business. He was fortunate to represent Temple on Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union (2007-2008) and Mid Atlantic Rugby Football Union (2008) all-star teams. Post college, Chris played his club rugby for Harrisburg RFC prior to joining the CV Rugby staff in 2018. Chris is an accountant in Harrisburg and active on several non-profits/charities.
